WOW #127: turn your scraps into sunbursts

I think it’s probably safe to say that you have a stash of scraps somewhere…just waiting to be used on a project!  We are scrapbookers, afterall, so “scraps” are an essential part of our hobby!  I have a huge bin full of scraps I just can’t part with because I love the paper so much!  Here’s one idea for using up your most treasured scraps: use them to create a paper sunburst on a project!

Creating a sunburst design is easy – here’s how to do it:

Step 1: Cut a template from scratch paper…make it whatever size you want your final sunburst pattern.  I cut mine at 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ – a standard card size.  Cut a second piece the same size.

Step 2:  Decide where you want your burst to “originate” or where you want all the points to meet.  Mark it on your scrap paper.

Step 3:  Draw the “burst” pattern and cut along the lines

Step 4: Using the pieces you cut in step 3 as templates, start cutting the pieces from scrap papers.  Arrange the pieces onto the 2nd template piece as you go so you don’t forget where they belong (if you happen to forget, don’t worry too much – it’ll be like putting a puzzle together once the pieces are all cut – not too bad).

Step 5:  Keep cutting and arranging until the 2nd template is completely full.

Step 6:  Glue the burst pieces down

Step 7:  Take a moment to admire your glued down sunburst pattern.  Trim any excess patterned paper from the edges.  Don’t worry if the pieces overlap (or look strange) in the middle (where the burst originates from) because you’re going to cover that area with embellishments later.

Step 8: This step is optional, but I liked the idea of adding machine stitching to some of the burst edges – not all of them, and I used a few different stitch styles just for fun.

Step 9:  Trim off any excess threads.

Step 10:  Add embellishments over the center of the burst

Step 11:  Attach the entire piece to a premade card base!

{Supplies: My Mind’s Eye (Patterned Papers); American Crafts (Embellishments); Cosmo Cricket (Sticker Sentiment)}

This same technique could be used to create an entire background for a scrapbook layout, or a tag, or a border, or an embellishment…the possibilities really are many!  We’d love to see your take on today’s “scraps to sunburst” WOW!  If you try it, please link us up to your project in the comments. :)
