WOW #170: down-size a design

In a world of super-size everything, it might be easy to believe that bigger is always better…but I think sometimes it’s good to scale things down a bit.  I love looking for inspiration in scrapbook layouts and figuring out how to translate certain design elements, techniques, and styles onto cards.  Usually, down-sizing is part of this translation process.  Today I’m sharing a card where I employed this process.

 wendysue_wow170_card

My original inspiration came from this layout by Heidi Sonbul  - it is featured in her Signature Series book (you can find it HERE- it’s amazing!):

heidi_sonbul_layout_inspiration

I just loved the way Heidi arranged the strips of patterned paper to make the fun eye-catching design on the right side of her page and I thought it would make a fun card-front.  Here’s how I did it:

1.  Gather several coordinating patterned papers and cut several strips.  (the strips do not have to be exactly the same width)

wendysue_wow170_1

2.  Cut a piece of cardstock to 4″ x 5 1/4″ (this is slightly smaller than the card base will be).  Draw a pencil line right down the center.

wendysue_wow170_2

3.  Start arranging the paper strips on either side of the pencil line (consider using pre-cut strips and strips with decorative edges as well).

wendysue_wow170_3

4.  When you are happy with the arrangment, start cutting the strips at an angle (use the pencil line as a guide for cutting the angle)

wendysue_wow170_4

5.  Attach the strips to the cardstock block with adhesive

wendysue_wow170_5

6.  After everything is attached, it will look crazy like this:

wendysue_wow170_6

And when you flip it over, it will look like this:

wendysue_wow170_7

Don’t worry – just grab some scissors and trim the outside edges

wendysue_wow170_8

Now it looks all nice and clean and pretty!

wendysue_wow170_9

7.  Add any additional embellishments (like the “hello” paper clip)

wendysue_wow170_10

8.  Adhere the block to the front of a white card base

wendysue_wow170_card2

9.  Add a fun paper block to the inside of the card for an unexpected surprise!

wendysue_wow170_card_inside

That’s it!  The down-sized design is now complete!

All of the fun papers and embellishments I used for this project were also designed by Heidi Sonbul for GCD Studios - she is one talented gal!
