Craft Supply Organization 101 – It’s the system that matters.

Craft Supply Organization 101 – It’s the system that matters.

I’ve been helping crafters get organized for nearly 10 years.  If you’ve organized your supplies on numerous occasions, but have never quite been happy with the result, it’s probably because you’re “containerizing” rather than “organizing.”  What you need is a great system, or Mental Map to follow to organize your stuff. Then you need a great container to hold all that stuff.  If you’ve got lots of stuff I’d recommend taking  a FREE online Organization Class – click here to register.

The Mental Map – A 4 Section SystemGroup your supplies into 4 major categories:

  1. Alphabet and Numbers
  2. Themes A-Z
  3. The Calendar Year – Holidays and Season
  4. The Rainbow

Imagine how much easier it would be to create a birthday page or card, if you only had to go to one place to find all of your birthday themed; Papers, Diecuts, Stickers, Stamps, Embellishments, etc. Not only would it be easier, it would eliminate a whole bunch of frustration and make crafting even more fun than it already is. Click here to read more about the 4 Section System and how it can help you get and stay organized!   Choosing a ContainerWhen it comes to containers you need one that meets the following criteria:

  1. Visibility – Can you see what you’ve got?
  2. Accessibility – Is it easy to get to what you’ve got?
  3. Expandability – Can you easily add more to what you’ve got?
  4. Portability – Can you take what you’ve got with you?

The ScrapRack is the best choice!

The ScrapRack System was designed specifically for Scrapbooking and has since evolved to be the best organization tool for all types of papercrafting including cardmaking and rubberstamping.    The ScrapRack was designed using a standard 3 Ring Binder System.  The 3 ring sections called “Spinders” attach to an angled base unit using commercial grade Velcro.

The ScrapRack Supply Storage Pages come in a variety of designs, and are all slightly larger than 12×12. Because this is a standard 3 hole punch system, you can also incorporate anything you’re already using into the ScrapRack System as well.  Click here to learn more about the Supply Storage Pages.

Okay, now that you understand a little bit about the tool, let’s talk about usability.   Once you’ve followed the 4 Section System and organized all of your supplies, you can fill your storage pages, put the pages on a Spinder and then put the Spinder on the your ScrapRack Base Unit.  Now, everything is Visible and Accessible, but what about the “Portable” part? The TravelPack – This binder pack allows you to take from 1-3 Spinders of supplies with you to a crop, class or shopping trip just by pulling the Spinder off your base unit and attaching it to the Velcro strip on the inside of the TravelPack.  It comes in 5 gorgeous colors.  Watch a video about The TravelPack – click here.

Remember, the biggest challenge with getting organized and getting lots done is having a good Mental Map or system that you can follow.  You can take one of my FREE online classes and go through the process of getting organized one step and a time.  For more information or to register for the next class click here.

Would it be worthwhile for me to take this class if I can’t get a Scrap Rack? My hubby is not working so I can’t justify-I have a dedicated room for my crafting and sewing but I keep trying to reorganize with the storage etc that I have and am frustrated!

    • Absolutely, the principles of the organization class can be applied across the board to many different storage tools and also to all types of supplies. If you’re on FB the Get Organized Challenge Group can provide LOTS of great feedback.

Diane Standish, YES> Take the class. Even if you don’t own a scraprack, it will help you out immensely. Everything you think you know about being organized will change after you take this class. It is honestly, the BEST system I’ve have ever seen and truly does allow you to find anything in under 30 seconds. I waited a few years before I finally bought my Scraprack. I was lucky, I got it secondhand through someone who no longer wanted to scrap. I LOVE it!! I cannot say enough good things about this system and the Scraprack itself.

I have watched and listened to the webinars multiple times and Finally used the system to organize my scrapbooking items. I did not buy the scraprack, but applied the organization system using items I already had (5$ crates from walmart and 6$ 3-pack sleeves from Hobby Lobby. The hardest part are the lists and you do have to do them first. It took me a couple of weeks to get everything where it needed to be, but it is SO much easier to find what I want. All my stuff is in one small corner of my scraproom compared to multiple containers, files and etc. Lots of purging too.
Hope this helps!! Good Luck !

Tiffany-I again thank you for this system. My favorite part is the “Holding Album” because I have my photos and paraphenalia together and in order. It makes it so much easier to grab and scrap a few minutes here and a few minutes there. I can see the progress as each page of photos and notes gets emptied. I highly recommend to take the class, even if you can’t get the spinders yet. I would definitely get lots of six pocket pages and a spinder or two for a holding album. My pages are jammed with pictures and they hold up extremely well.
